Attendance at an expertly run nursery school provides children with an excellent “pre-school” experience, in enabling the child to make a confident and smooth transition into mainstream school.

The Lynstead House Nursery School offers full or part time places to children aged between 2 - 5 years and older after school.

Children who will be with us during the lunch time period are required to bring a packed lunch with them.

Lynstead House Nursery School has two separate groups. Our Pre-Nursery taking 2 - 3 year olds and our Nursery taking 3 -5 year olds. Both groups have fully qualified staff in attendance.

We aim to encourage good social behaviour and develop self-care skills with the 2 - 3 years olds, it is our aim to settle the children in, to help them to gain confidence away from home and promote good sociable behaviour. The 3 -5 year olds group is structured and is more learning orientated.

Everyone working for Lynstead Children's Services is expected to give of themselves the highest possible standard of warmth, kindness and behaviour, and work to provide the young people looked after with an interesting and wise learning faculty, which is safe, and whose carers provide standards which will benefit those whom they look after.

It is our intention that all the children attending the Nursery are given a standard of learning here, that will boost their sense of self esteem, provide them with learning appropriate to their needs and ability. We will also teach them how to conduct themselves so that they may relate to others in a socially acceptable way, enabling them to enjoy a full and satisfying life and achieve the Early Learning Goals.

These are very high ideals and principles, and no young person, no matter how young, should ever be denied the chance to attain a sense of personal esteem and achievement. It is our duty to work to this end for every young person who comes to the Nursery.

Personal, Social and Emotional Development

Within a nurturing environment, children are individually supported in developing confidence, autonomy and self-respect. They are encouraged to work and concentrate independently and also to take part in the life of the Nursery, sharing and co-operating with other children and adults. Through activities, conversation and practical example, they learn acceptable ways to express their own feelings and to have respect for the feelings of others. All children are given the opportunity, as appropriate, to take responsibility for themselves and also for the group, its members and its property.

Language, Literacy and Communication

In both small and large groups, children are encouraged to extend their vocabulary and fluency by talking and listening, and by hearing and responding to stories, songs and rhymes. Children are helped to understand that written symbols carry meaning, to be aware of the purpose of writing and, when they are ready, to use drawn and written symbols for themselves. A well-stocked book corner gives every child the opportunity and encouragement to become familiar with books, able to handle them and aware of their uses, both for reference and as a source of stories and pictures.

Mathematics

By means of adult-supported practical experience, children become familiar with the sorting, matching, ordering, sequencing and counting activities which form the basis for early mathematics. As they use their developing mathematical understanding to solve practical problems, children are assisted to learn and use the vocabulary of mathematics, identifying objects by shape position, size, volume and number. Songs, games and picture books help children become aware of number sequences and, when they are ready, to use simple mathematical operations such as adding.

Creative Development

Children are encouraged to use a wide range of resources in order to express their own ideas and feelings and to construct their individual response to experience in two and three dimensions. Art equipment, including paint, glue crayons and pencils as well as natural discarded resources, provides for open-ended exploration of colour, shape and texture and the development of skills in painting, drawing and collage. Children join in with and respond to music and stories, and there are many opportunities for imaginative role play, both individually and as apart of a group.

Effective Supervision

top^

Lynstead House Nursery School's policy is to offer admission to any child including those with Additional Needs (special educational needs). We have ground floor accommodation for easy access to children with physical disabilities. Where we have facilities to provide effectively for such a child, the application should be treated no less favourably than applications for other children. Where there are known additional needs these will be discussed before entry into the Nursery to ensure we meet ALL their needs.

Our staff are able to differentiate work to levels suitable for the individual child’s abilities, this can include extensions of work for those who are more able under the supervision of our SENCO (special educational needs coordinator).

Our staff ratio permits us to offer individual attention if and when required.

We maintain links with outside agencies, i.e. speech therapist, learning specialist, educational psychologist, and we also maintain a close liaison with our local primary schools.

In line with the Code of Practice of the Identification and Assessment of Special Educational Needs (Early Years) as issued by the DfES. We regularly assess the children attending the Nursery and liase with outside agencies.

In line with governmental policy we ensure that our records kept on children with additional needs are up to date accurate and enable us to monitor your child’s progress so each child will have an Individual Learning Plan (ILP). Your child’s keyworker will be responsible for the ILP in conjunction with our SENCO.

If it is felt that a child’s needs cannot be met in the Nursery without additional support of a one to one worker, funding will be sought to employ one this would be done in conjunction with parents and carers being informed at every stage of the process.

We believe that children and adults flourish best in an ordered environment in which everyone knows what is expected of them and children are able to develop their play without fear of being hurt or hindered by anyone else. We aim to work towards a situation in which children can develop self-discipline and self-esteem in an atmosphere of mutual respect and encouragement.

In order to achieve this:-

  • Rules governing the conduct of the Nursery and the behaviour of the children are discussed at the staff meetings and explained to children and parents.
  • All staff in the Nursery will ensure that the rules are applied consistently, so that children have the security of knowing what to expect and can build up habits of behaviour.
  • All staff will try to provide a positive role model for the children with regard to friendliness, care and courtesy.
  • Staff within the Nursery will praise and endorse desirable behaviour.

When children behave in an unacceptable way:-

  • Physical punishment, such as smacking or shaking, will neither be used nor threatened.
  • Children will never be sent out of the room.
  • Techniques intended to single out and humiliate individual children such as the “naughty chair” will not be used.
  • Children who misbehave will be given one-to-one adult support in seeing what was going wrong and working towards a better pattern of behaviour.
  • In cases of serious misbehaviour, such as racial or other abuse, the unacceptable of the behaviour and attitudes will be made clear immediately, but by means of explanations rather than personal blame.
  • In any case of misbehaviour, it will always be made clear to the child or children in question that it is the behaviour and not the child that is unwelcome.
  • Staff will not shout, or raise their voices in a threatening way.
  • Staff in the Nursery will make themselves aware of, and respect, a range of cultural expectations regarding interactions between people.
  • Any behaviour problems will be handled in a developmentally appropriate fashion, respecting individual children’s level of understanding and maturity.
  • Recurring problems will be tackled by the Nursery, in partnership with the child’s parents/carers using objective observation records to establish an understanding of the cause.
  • Staff will be aware that some kinds of behaviour may arise from a child’s special needs.

In keeping with the Children’s Act 1989, Lynstead Children's Services policy is that no form of physical punishment is allowed and if used will result in serious disciplinary action being taken against the member of staff.

Lynstead House Nursery consists of two buildings -

2 - 3 year olds (pres)

3 - 5 year olds (Main Nursery)

Each room is decorated with pictures of the children work which are changed periodically. Pictures often reflect specific themes and ideas i.e. seasons, festivals, time. Both the children and their parents are pleased to see examples of their work on display.

The outside play area is used extensively and the children enjoy their free playtime on the large toys provided.

All equipment that we have at the Nursery promotes varying aspects of learning and development for the children who attend.

Parents are the first educators of their children we aim to support and complement the parental role.

We welcome you to raise any particular problems or difficulties so it can be highlighted and resolved as quickly as possible.

We aim to raise awareness with parents/carers of Lynstead House Nursery Schools procedures and policies most of which are set out within this prospectus.

To ensure that all parents have a copy of our complaints procedure and how to raise queries at any stage of the academic year at times that are suitable to all.

We ensure that we consult with our parents to ensure that we are providing the range and type of services that parents wish to purchase.
